Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay 2017 has won the Australian white wine trophy at the International Wine Challenge 2019 in London.

It was one of the highest scoring wines of the competition earning 97 points from the judges. It also took out the Australian and Tasmanian Chardonnay trophies.

In November last year, the Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay 2017 picked up two major trophies at the 2018 Royal Melbourne Wine Awards: Douglas Seabrook trophy for best single vineyard wine and the Francois de Castella trophy for best young white wine.

At the 2015 International Wine Challenge, the Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013 won identical awards, making it best Australian red wine, best Australian and Tasmanian Pinot Noir.

Senior winemaker Adam Wadewitz (pictured above) said: “We knew it was a special wine from the start but the 2017 Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay has proven to be at the top if its game. To be judged the best Australian white wine at this level is just awesome.”

The Tolpuddle Vineyard is located in the Coal River Valley just 20 minutes outside of Hobart, and was planted solely to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, first established in 1988.

Since acquiring the 20-hectare vineyard in 2011 after a road-trip to Tasmania, Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW have invested heavily in improving all aspects of the vineyard and are fully committed to seeing it recognised as one of Australia’s greatest single vineyard sites. The vineyard is named after the Tolpuddle Martyrs whose ‘reward’ for starting England’s first agrarian union was to be transported to Tasmania as convicts.
