The medal winners of the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships (CSWWC) were announced this week with a total of 167 gold and 229 silver medals awarded in this year’s competition.
Now in its 11th year, the CSWWC saw close to 1,000 sparkling wines entered this year, judged over 11 days from 20 countries worldwide at the Goodnestone Park in Kent, England.
Italy once again took the top of the leader board for the most medals, with a total 70 gold and 123 silver medals. Next was France, who took home 55 gold medals and 36 silver medals. Australia took third place on the medal leader board closely followed by Spain, with the UK making up the top five.
“We were thrilled with the quality of the whole range of wines that we tasted this year,” said judge Essi Avellan MW. “This has been another great year for results, once again demonstrating how exciting the sparkling wine industry is. It is not only the CSWWC’s mission to promote world class wines, but also to discover and reward new and exciting wines from established and emerging regions across the world!”
The Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year trophy was once again awarded to Trentodoc producer Ferrari. This award is not decided by any arbitrary system but strictly according to the highest number of gold medals won each year, and with no less than 13 gold medals Ferrari has now won this accolade for the fourth consecutive year and as many as seven times in total. However, a few contenders this year were snapping at their heels for this award – look out 2025!
“What’s terrific is that the medal wines come from both the largest and smallest producers, from private enterprises and high-flying cooperatives, from the long established to newcomers, and in recent years from a sudden rush of organic producer,” said Tom Stevenson, founder and chairman of the CSWWC.
“Although the CSWWC does not award medals lower than silver, the judges take a keen interest in theoretical bronze winners. It is important for those producers to understand that they could be on the verge of achieving a world class sparkling wine. There were 309 theoretical bronze medal wines this year.”
The Best in Class and trophy winners will be revealed at this year’s CSWWC awards dinner on the 24th October in London.
