Domaine Chandon acquires King Valley vineyard

Domaine Chandon Australia announced it has expanded its premium vineyard holdings with the acquisition of a Whitlands vineyard located in the King Valley, Victoria.

Sitting at an elevation of 800 to 850 metres, the vineyard is one of the highest and coolest in Victoria and has a strong history of producing exceptional sparkling and table grapes.

The Whitlands vineyard, located approximately 55 kilometres south of Milawa, has 58 hectares of established vineyard with potential for expansion.

Since its development in 1982, the Whitlands vineyard has gone on to reliably produce multi-award winning wines.

“We’re delighted to be taking on this vineyard,” Domaine Chandon estate director Susan Caudry said.

“We’ve been looking for a premier cool climate, high altitude vineyard and this Whitlands vineyard delivers on the diversity and quality required for Chandon’s wines.”

Domaine Chandon takes over the vineyard from Brown Brothers.

“We are sad to part with this vineyard, but unfortunately our requirement for the very specialised type of grapes it grows has dropped,” Brown Brothers CEO Roland Wahlquist said.

“We are glad to see it go to a company of Domaine Chandon’s calibre.

“It has produced many great wines for us over the years, and I am sure it will continue to do so for its new owners.”

The purchase of the Whitlands vineyard expands Domaine Chandon’s vineyard ownership to three premium, Victorian vineyards.

Domaine Chandon’s Green Point Vineyard in Yarra Valley was established in 1986, followed by a Strathbogie Ranges vineyard in 1994.

Its ownership is effective from 10 January 2014 with the first grapes to be harvested for the winery in 2014.
