The Great Australian Shiraz Challenge is celebrating 30 years in 2024, making it one of the longest running independent wine shows in Australia.
The Great Australian Shiraz Challenge is a unique opportunity for Australia’s premier red winemakers to showcase their Shiraz, benchmark winemaking and regional points of differences and assist with reinforcing the reputation of the variety as a national and international wine icon.
“We are delighted to have reached our 30th anniversary and looking forward to hosting a successful 2024 event,” said event director, Julian McLean.
“Saint Martin return as naming rights sponsor and our judging team has been confirmed: Jen Pfieffer (chair), Jeni Port, Sarah Andrew, Shavaughn Wells, Justin Purser and Steve Paul.”
Fowles Wines will again host this year’s event, with entries opening online on Monday 5th August and closing on Friday 6th September.
Judging will take place over three days from 1st – 3rd October, with the awards to be announced online on Friday 1st November.
The 30th anniversary event has strong sponsorship support from: Orora Glass, MCC Label Solutions, Leocatas Transport, Winetitles, Interpack, Filchem and Melbourne Royal.
The 2024 Challenge continues the spectacular evolution of the event over the last 30 years. Wines entered are classed and tasted based on climate and regional points of difference – this ensures all entries are judged fairly and objectively.
In 2016, individual state-based trophies were introduced, as well as a trophy for the best Shiraz over five years old. In 2021, the Best Organic Shiraz Trophy acknowledged winemakers’ commitment to this category, and in 2022 a Sparkling Shiraz class was introduced, further enhancing the appeal of the Challenge.
