“When we started in 2015, we had a five-year plan because we thought that surely a group like this wouldn’t be needed after that? How wrong we were,” said Jane Thomson OAM, founder and chair of Australian Women in Wine (AWIW).
AWIW will celebrate 10 years in 2025 with a 10th Birthday Gala Night, set to take place at the National Wine Centre in Adelaide on Saturday, 19 July 2025, the eve of the 19th Wine Industry Technical Conference.
The organisers said the event will be a celebration of a decade dedicated to championing the achievements of women in the Australian wine industry and advocating for gender equality across the sector.
Over the past ten years, AWIW has been promoting and supporting women in wine, and lobbying for a more gender inclusive Australian wine industry. The work of AWIW has been done entirely by a group of volunteers who have worked with the vision of creating a better and more diverse wine industry for all. The 10th Birthday Gala Night aims to honour these contributions, continue the push for gender equality and inspire future generations of women in wine.
Thomson announced late last year that she will step down from her leadership role after 10 years following the gala, expressing her immense pride in the AWIW and the work it has achieved over the last decade.
“From grand, showcase events like hosting awards ceremonies that highlighted the talents of our women in wine in London, New York and Sydney, to slogging it out behind the scenes lobbying authorities, we have moved the industry forward for the better,” said Thomson.
She added that, as forces across the world make goals of diversity and equality “more difficult than ever”, now was an important time to band together.
The evening will feature a curated menu paired with wines showcasing the talents of female winemakers across Australia, and will include insights from keynote speakers, as well as providing entertainment and networking opportunities. The event is not exclusively for women, with AWIW saying that all are invited – men, women and non-binary.
