The Riverland Wine Management Committee announced yesterday that Dr Darren Oemcke has resigned from his position as independent chair.
“Dr Oemcke has been a passionate advocate for the region since taking on the role in 2021,” said the committee in a statement on Thursday, thanking Dr Oemcke for his “leadership and commitment” during his tenure.
“The recent challenges faced by Riverland winegrape growers and winemakers have resulted in funding reductions from the Riverland Wine Industry Fund,” the statement continued.
“Dr Oemcke’s resignation highlights both his and Riverland Wine’s dedication to ensuring long-term, effective member representation and the sustainability of the industry body as the Riverland wine sector navigates one of its most difficult economic periods in recent history.”
The Riverland Wine Management Committee said it is currently reviewing the organisation’s objectives and capabilities to better serve its members. As part of this process, the committee has decided not to seek a replacement for the independent chair position.
Jim Markeas will assume the role of acting chair for Riverland Wine.
