On-Premise Revolution

The Australian On-Premise wine market is undergoing a once in a generation change. Listings of imports have lifted from a quarter to a third of all listings. The number of brands listed has increase by 75% in just 12 months after being fairly stable at around 2000 for the last seven years. This is according to Wine Businesses Solutions’ Wine On-Premise Australia 2015 report which has just been released this week.

According to WBS Principal, Peter McAtamney – “New winemakers, new winemaking, new distributors and new routes to market are meaning that what an Australian consumer sees on a wine list today is totally different to what they saw only a year or so ago. Restaurateurs and their customers have gotten it into their heads that they can have absolutely anything, from anywhere. And they can.

The large national distributor companies have, by and large, not been able to keep up with the pace of change with most loosing significant market share. In their place has come a whole raft of smaller, more nimble competitors.

Interestingly, however, some of the most traditional brands have survived quite well in this environment as the drive to drink more locally and a new-found respect for tradition shores up their position. For example, Tyrrells is now the most listed wine brand in NSW and De Bortoli, the most listed in Victoria. NSW was the only Australian State to actually grow its share of listings during the last year with the Hunter and Orange doing particularly well. Regions like the Yarra Valley and the Adelaide Hills that engage in a lot of innovation also performed well.”
