Sensory certification of wine for common faults

Some overseas importers require certification that wine has been tasted to be free of faults. To help industry meet these requirements the AWRI is now providing a service to screen wines for the presence of eight common wine faults. The certificate may also be beneficial for other supplier/client relationships or companies seeking independent sensory evaluation of their products.

More wonderful news for biodynamics and Biodynamic Agriculture Australia Ltd (BAA) members following on from Sam Statham of Rosnay Organic Wines of Australia’s win in the NSW Organic Pioneer Award. Barossa Valley biodynamic winemaker Kalleske Wines has been honoured in London where their 2011 Clarry’s GSM has picked up three awards at the 2012 International Wine Challenge. The International Wine Challenge hosts the largest wine competition in the world with over 9000 wines entered each year so it was a thrill when Tony Kalleske accepted the award for ‘Biodynamic Wine of the Year’ as well as the two trophies; ‘Australian Red’ and ‘Barossa GSM Blend’ on behalf of the 2011 Clarry’s GSM.

Save more wine from 2012 – Switch to Pluxcompact Bentonite

Recent independent trials on 2012 fruit illustrated the large savings winemakers can make by changing to a new activated Bentonite like Pluxcompact from the old sodium Bentonite products. Cost savings in the independent trial were as high as 5 cents/Lt in premium parcels of fruit and down to one cent/Lt for fruit purchased at $250 per tonne. Pluxcompact Bentonite is obtained by a special procedure to ensure protein removal efficiencies comparable to sodium Bentonite with lees volumes similar to that of calcium Bentonite.

Achieving Riesling excellence in Canberra

The 13th Canberra International Riesling Challenge is set down for 8-13 October 2012 at the Hyatt Hotel and Albert hall, Canberra. The event, the biggest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, attracts entries from 10 countries and judges from Germany, Singapore, USA, New Zealand and Australia. Wines are judged by region, country, and the world, using the international 100-point judging system, in groups of a maximum of 12 wines to prevent palate fatigue.
