Barossa Valley winemaker Hare’s Chase has returned triumphant from the 2025 Sommelier Choice Awards in Chicago, USA, where it won awards for both Red Wine Producer of the Year and Shiraz of the Year. The 2021 Hare’s Chase Ironscraper Shiraz was crowned Shiraz of the year, and all four Hare’s Chase wines entered in the competition received gold medals and 90+ point ratings.
The Sommelier’s Choice Awards is a competition that evaluates wines specifically for the restaurant and bar market. Wines are judged on key criteria such as quality, typicity, food-friendliness, value for money and packaging, providing sommeliers and beverage buyers with a guide to wines that belong on a list in the USA. Assessed by a panel of sommeliers, wine directors and Master Sommeliers from across the country, the awards and medals affirm Hare’s Chase’s commitment to crafting high quality wines, and the ongoing appeal and relevance of classically styled Barossa reds in the world’s largest wine market.
“Being recognised at the Sommeliers Choice Awards by the very professionals who shape the US dining experience is a tremendous honour,” said Matt Reynolds, chief winemaker and general manager at Hare’s Chase. “Having our wine evaluated and awarded by a panel that includes Master Sommeliers validates our commitment to excellence in every bottle. We pride ourselves in making red wines that deliver on the promise of generous flavour that Barossa is renowned for, and these results uphold the continued appeal and relevance of the classic Barossa style.”
“The Sommelier’s Choice Awards is designed to spotlight wines that excel in a restaurant setting,” said Sid Patel, CEO of Beverage Trade Network and founder of the competition. “Our judging panel includes some of the most respected sommeliers and Master Sommeliers in the country ensuring that every winning wine delivers where it counts: in front of guests, paired with great food.”
