Among a hearty roster of winners at the 2019 Mornington Peninsula Wine Show were wineries that showcased excellence in different wine varieties was Willow Creek for its 2018 Pinot Gris and Montalto Pennon Hill’s 2018 Shiraz.
The show committee chairman Lindsay McCall and chair of judges David Bicknell delivered the results and trophies across 12 categories which demonstrated the breadth and depth of winemaking on the Mornington Peninsula.
The trophy awards culminated in the Provenance Awards for the region’s hero varieties, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Lindsay McCall explains.
“The Provenance Awards were envisaged as a different way of assessing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, looking at three vintages of a wine in detail, and in the context of consistency of quality, vineyard character, and winemaking style. As the Mornington Peninsula focuses more and more on individual site characteristics and vineyard recognition, these awards allow the judges to explore the subtleties of terroir in a formal wine show format,” McCall said.
From a judging perspective David Bicknell added, “there was plenty of high quality competition across the classes. In the hallmark Chardonnay and Pinot Noir categories top wines were complex, had excellent flow and extension while avoiding the pitfalls of excessive oak. A delight to judge.”
Now in its sixth year, the event was hosted at Jackalope’s Doot Doot Doot restaurant, where 80 guests gathered in camaraderie to enjoy the celebration. Guest Mayor Cr David Gill gave praise to the contribution of the industry to the economy from an agriculture perspective, environmental sustainability, tourism stimulation as well as building the reputation of the region through local and international trading.
“The wine industry is a significant contributor to the region, the Mornington Shire Council is very pleased to be supporting the industry and the Show,” he said.
Tosh Greenslade, Melbourne writer and actor best known for his work as a regular cast member on all 10 series of Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell on the ABC was Master of Ceremonies where three ‘hatted’ restaurants including RACV Cape Schanck and Paringa Estate joined Guy Stanaway from Jackalope Hotel to create a menu highlighting local food and matching the excellence showcased in the regional Wine Show.

Best Pinot Noir & Premier’s Trophy Selection: 2018 Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Block 5 Pinot Noir
