Private sustainability regulation in the form of eco certification and labelling provides both opportunities and challenges for consumers and producers. In Australia, consumers are faced with no less than 57 different eco labels (ecolabelindex.com) – some local, some global. This research takes a deep dive into consumer attitudes about sustainability certification in the wine industry and discusses how consumers make sense of wine and sustainability and how they can be supported in their decision-making journey. Insights from this work will help winemakers, wineries, marketers and sellers of wine better understand how their own brand(s) fit within this consumer sense-making map and how to align consumer communication.
