2011 vintage report for Alpine Valleys (Victoria)

Supplied by Alpine Valleys Vignerons, Growing season: Initial optimism with the early September flooding rains soon turned to dismay with continued rain events and cooler temperatures throughout the growing season. Many growers in the region applied a record number of sprays with diligent growers rewarded for their tenacity and meticulous attention to detail, although with generally lower crop levels.
Vintage: Harvest for sparkling wine commenced in early March, nearly four weeks later than in 2010, followed shortly by Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and other whites for table wines. Red varieties began arriving at wineries in mid to late April, with some later ripening varieties, such as Cabernet and Nebbiolo, being harvested in May, which is quite late for this region.
Yields and quality: Yields were down 15-20% on average.
