2010 vintage report for Alpine Valleys (Victoria)

Supplied by the Alpine Valleys Vignerons
Growing season: Vines coped well with early season high temperatures due to high soil moisture profiles following good winter rains. Whites were picked slightly early in late January and early February. February and March rains increased disease pressure but the cooler temperatures and extended ripening season produced lower yielding, higher quality fruit with exceptional flavour.
Vintage: Vintage in some parts of the valleys was slightly early this year but most saw a return to more normal (pre-drought) picking times. The cooler, late season resulted in slower ripening of reds leading to an extended vintage, without the condensed harvest of grapes seen in recent hot years when all varieties were ripening simultaneously.
Yields and quality: Yields averaged across all the valleys were about 3.9 tonnes per acre. Pinot Gris and Shiraz are showing exceptional flavours this year and the quality of the Italian varieties in these valleys just keeps getting better.
