2002 vintage report for Geelong (Victoria)

Geelong had a generally significantly reduced tonnage for the 2002 vintage. Budburst was promising with good bud differentiation and excellent weather in October. However, cool and windy weather during flowering resulted in poor fruitset and adversely affected cell division in the grapes. The summer ripening period was cooler than average with monthly average maximums of 2–5°C lower during December at various centres.
‘This resulted in many growers reporting tonnages of only 30% of the 2001 vintage,’ said Nick Norgard, president of the Geelong Winegrowers Association.
‘There were of course notable exceptions mainly in areas protected from the strong winds experienced during flowering. Growers reported small seeds in the fruit, green stalks with good levels of acid in most varieties. Most growers reported excellent colour in red grapes.
‘The vintage, while small in tonnage, is expected to produce excellent wines from most varieties.’
