2001 vintage report for Tumbarumba (New South Wales)

Unusual and variable weather conditions presented growers with a constant challenge throughout the 2000/2001 season, said Brian Wilkinson from the region’s Grape Growers Association. A very wet August/September led to delayed and uneven budburst. Cold wet spells continued into October, further inhibiting early growth; however, minimal frost damaged was reported. November brought excellent growing conditions, followed by storms during flowering. Brian said the resultant crop loads were mostly down on the previous year’s general yield. This was most marked in Chardonnay. Botrytis was evident early in the ripening period but warm conditions allowed rapid maturation and no significant loss resulted. Other diseases did not present any problem and irrigation was not necessary in the majority of vineyards. ‘Most fruit destined for white and sparkling wine was processed at the new Tumbarumba facility, allowing a rapid and timely vintage,’ Brian said. ‘Reported quality for white and sparkling wines has been excellent in the main, with Pinot Noir for table wine receiving variable acceptance.’
