1999 vintage report for Granite Belt (Queensland)

Good late winter and spring rainfall which allowed vines to establish well, and a generally dry harvest, led to a 50% increase in yield over the 1998 figures, said Peter Watters, president of the Granite Belt Wine Industry Association. The rainfall during vintage fell mostly between whites and reds, with some minor losses of whites from botrytis and some minor outbreaks of downy mildew. Angelo Puglisi, a producer in the region, said warm days and cool nights during vintage were conducive to the production of rich fruit and full bodied red wines. In the whites, early production was slightly thin as a result of rain, but later crops were excellent. Some vineyards were unable to attract workers even though the area has a level of unemployment.
