1999 vintage report for Burnett Valley (Queensland)

A severe hailstorm in the northern part of the region around Bjelke-Petersen dam caused up to 80% crop loss in that area. Merv O’Reilly, president of the Burnett Valley Winegrowers Association said that hail of that severity had not been seen for at least 50 years. As a result of the hail and stormy conditions across the region at times, yield decreased by 40% from last year. Fruit damaged by hail encouraged the onset of diseases and wet and humid conditions at some locations generated botrytis. ‘Possibly the wettest year for a long time generally reduced quality,’ said Merv. ‘However there are quite a few exceptions which will result in excellent wine being produced.’ He said there were a number of excellent Chardonnays and a few Verdelhos, with the balance average or above.
