Five years after its Adelaide Hills vineyard was devastated by the 2019 Cuddlee Creek Bushfires, one family-owned winery has made a triumphant return to glory. Barristers Block was awarded the trophy for Best Sauvignon Blanc at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show last Friday—a varietal that has quite literally risen from the ashes, after being completely wiped out by the bushfires.
It was only in January 2020 that water returned to the vineyard. That same year, the team at Barristers Block dedicated significant inputs into the vines to ensure the viability of future fruit. Battling widespread crop damage from the fire, the winery decided to replant 50% of the vineyard, and as a result, 50% was completely reworked to be rejuvenated from the roots up.
Barristers Block founder and managing director Jan Allen said this achievement was the fruit of hard work from both the family and vineyard team.
“When the fire ripped through the vineyard, we knew that we had to get it back,” said Allen. “It’s one of our most prized and most popular varietals and we wanted to make sure that this vineyard could be revived and enjoyed for future years to come.”
“With the help of our Adelaide Hills community, friends, family and colleagues we were successfully able to do that, and we are forever grateful for that support.”
“To win this amazing award at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show is very special and it’s a tribute to all those who supported us.”
Family owner of Barristers Block Lachlan Allen said the award recognition from established wine and industry veterans was a great way to round out the year.
“We have always known this vineyard produces some really beautiful fruit and the Barristers Block 2024 Home Series Sauvignon Blanc is a very special wine that has been expertly blended and crafted by our viticulture team alongside our talented winemakers.”
James Allen, family owner and director, added that the Adelaide Hills Wine Show win was extremely valuable to the brand.
“Over the years we have made huge investments into our brand, the vineyard, our wines and our cellar door. Our vision has always been to produce world-class wines and to deliver a memorable cellar-door experience for local, interstate and international visitors.”
“With the Adelaide Hills being home to a vast array of award-winning winemakers, it’s heart-warming to get this recognition from our peers.”
