Clare Valley producer Pikes Wines was among the many South Australian wineries hit hard by frosts last week, with the company’s estate vineyards in Polish Hill River impacted by a significant frost event that could reduce their yield by 70% “at best”.

After last week’s chilling temperatures left producers across several states reeling, with many still holding their breath to assess the extent of the damage, emotions are mixed at Pikes Wines, where the same week has also brought with it a collection of accolades and acknowledgements.

“It has been a rollercoaster of a week,” said managing director Jamie Pike.

“On Tuesday, we were hit by a severe frost that has devastated our Polish Hill River vineyard’s early spring growth. The next few weeks will reveal how the vines recover, but at best, we are looking at a 70% reduction in yield.”

Although the news of the frosts was a “tough blow”, especially for the vineyard operators, Pikes Wines also experienced a series of wins at the 2024 Clare Valley Wine Show and the South Australian Wine Industry Association (SAWIA) Excellence Awards.

Pikes Wines was honoured with four trophies, including: Best Sweet White for its Pikes ‘First Cut’ Riesling 2023, Best Rosé for the Pikes ‘Luccio’ Sangiovese Rosé 2024, Best Dry White (Other than Riesling) for Pikes ‘Luccio’ Albariño 2024 and the Chair of Judges Award for Pikes ‘Olga Emmie’ Riesling 2024, as well as numerous medals.

“[…] These wins could not have come at a better time, recognising the team’s hard work, expertise, and unwavering commitment,” said Pike.

“Although the challenges ahead are significant, I remain optimistic. We have a strong inventory of red and white wines already bottled, as well as in tank and barrel. The support of our customers has been invaluable over the years, and I am confident they will continue to support us. These recent awards are a testament to the resilience and quality that have defined Pikes Wines for 40 years.”

In addition to the Clare Valley Wine Show accolades, Pikes Wines also received the WHS Trophy at the SAWIA Awards of Excellence last week. This award recognises a project that involved the design and implementation of a new chemical storage and handling facility at the vineyard.

“This is an accolade I’m particularly proud of,” said Pike. “Along with our Clare Valley Wine Show wins, it serves as rare external validation—not only are we making great wine, but we are doing it the right way. Our team worked collaboratively on this project, and I am thrilled for them.”

As Pikes Wines looks toward the future, the company said it remains steadfast in its mission to produce exceptional wines while navigating the evolving challenges of the industry.
