1998 vintage report for Gippsland (Victoria)

Yields in the Gippsland region increased by up to 100%, according to Val Friend, secretary of the Gippsland Grapegrowers & Winemakers Association. Reasons included good weather, the lack of disease, more hectares coming into production, an increase in bird protection and existing vines becoming mature. ‘Some vineyards suffered a lack of water but 95% of vineyards were totally disease-free because of the warm season and the drought also kept the birds at bay,’ Val said. She described the 1998 quality of reds as ‘great vibrant colours, good fruit characters, intense flavours, perfectly formed large bunches and good acid/tannin balance.’ White varieties are ‘excellent,’ particularly the Chardonnay, with intense fruit flavours, good acid and great potential. Gippsland growers were caught slightly by surprise with the early vintage and there was a rush for barrel purchases. Tank capacity was stretched to the limit with exceptionally high yields. Very warm weather at vintage meant a problem with cooling juice and must. ‘Otherwise, the Gippsland winemakers are smiling as our region continues to grow and produce excellent wines from an increasing number of varieties. The future looks good!’ said Val.
