2001 vintage report for Hilltops (New South Wales)

Lou Timson, secretary of the Hilltops Vineyards Association reports that some growers in the region are noting the best quality red fruit for many years, with ‘fantastic’ colour and flavour. ‘Whites also showed excellent quality, producing superior flavour components and acid,’ she said. ‘Wines already produced show complex characters.’ Vintage in the region began on 10 March. A 10% decrease in yields from the previous year was the result of heavy rain during flowering. Weather during vintage included long warm days and cooler nights and there was some potential for powdery mildew; however growers were alert and used integrated disease management and prevention. Lou says it is interesting to note that many vineyards are now using mechanical harvesting.
