2001 vintage report for Coonawarra (South Australia)

Some growers in the Coonawarra region had difficulty placing all their fruit, according to Bruce Redman, vice president of the Coonawarra Vignerons Association. However, eventually all grapes in the region were picked. Vintage started early and went for a long time, due to the difficulty of maturing grapes from young vineyards. Most vineyards were above average in yield due to a good fruitset and the absence of frosts, and there were also significant new vineyards coming into bearing. This resulted in a 15-20% increase in yield over last year. Bruce said above-average temperatures in January had caused some leaf stress fine but cool to mild weather during vintage had meant there were no disease problems. He described the quality of whites as very good with Chardonnay being exceptional. ‘Reds are generally good to very good quality from mature vineyards across all varieties,’ he said. However young vineyards had higher cropping levels and struggled to reach the desired maturity levels.
