2010 vintage report for Somerset Valleys (Queensland)

Supplied by the Somerset Valleys Grape and Wine Producers’ Association
Growing season: Even budburst and good early growth in the region’s vineyards gave vines a great start to the 2010 vintage. Extremely dry weather leading up to Christmas meant irrigation in most vineyards was utilised to maintain growth – all had adequate water supplies for this to occur. Towards Christmas, excessive heat affected the quality of the fruit in some vineyards in the region. Disease pressure, however, from mildews, etc was very low due to this dry weather period. Those heat-affected blocks, in the main, were not harvested to preserve wine quality. Most vineyards and wineries intended to produce smaller vintages anyway because of the larger-than-usual 2009 production throughout the region. So, the pre-Christmas hot weather sorted out, in the main, which blocks to drop from production for a lot of the vineyards.
Vintage: Timing of the harvest was similar to previous years, with some blocks picked a little earlier because of the earlier ripening of some varieties. Some wet weather during vintage needed to be managed with those blocks eventually harvested and suffering no real ill-effects.
Yields and quality: Some vineyards reported excellent fruit quality at vintage, especially with Viognier and Verdelho.
