2010 vintage report for Scenic Rim (Queensland)

Supplied by the Scenic Rim Wine Industry Association
Growing season: Across the region, from Marburg in the north to Rathdowney in the south, total rainfall for the 2009-10 August-to-February growing season varied from 522mm to 440mm. Between 47-75% of this rainfall occurred in the pre-harvest to harvest period from December to February. The growing season was unusual with very low rainfall from July to October and in January, and very high rainfall in February. Across the region, mean maximum temperatures were above average from August to December with very high recordings in August (36.4ºC), November (40.3ºC) and December (39.7ºC). These weather conditions contributed to very high humidity in the vineyards. Disease was minimal in the south with some downy mildew observed. However, powdery mildew and berry rots, including botrytis, were severe in the north with some late-ripening varieties not being harvested due to loss from disease. Leaf plucking was almost universal throughout the region. Budburst was normal and varied from mid-to-late August in the north to early to mid-September in the south. The later budburst in the south was probably associated with higher altitudes (up to 148m compared with 30m), with the mid-September budburst also associated with late August winter pruning.
Vintage: Harvest of white varieties (Verdelho, Chardonnay, Viognier and Semillon) was early with most picked by 20 January. In two vineyards, Verdelho was ready for harvest before Christmas and was picked in very early January. Baumés varied from 11.2 for Semillon, 11.8-12.3 for Chardonnay, 11.9-13.8 for Verdelho and 12.8 for Viognier. Harvest dates for red varieties were either similar or slightly earlier than for previous vintages with most harvested by 20 February. Baumés varied from 10-13.5 for Shiraz, 13.7 for Chambourcin, 12.9 for Cabernet Sauvignon and 11.8 for Grenache. Predictions of further rain and associated disease contributed to earlier-than-normal harvests for 2010, with some reds coming off the vines prematurely.
Yields and quality: Yields were generally down, ranging from 1.7t/ha to 5t/ha. Shiraz yields were down to 1.7t/ha while Chambourcin yielded up to 4.7t/ha. Verdelho and Viognier yielded in excess of 4t/ha at Harrisville. Verdelho and Viognier were standout varieties for winemaking this vintage.
