2010 vintage report for Clare Valley (South Australia)

Supplied by Clare Valley Winemakers Inc.
Growing season: For the first time in several years, we had a wet winter with rains through spring which enabled the vintage to start with good sub-level moisture. Summer was hot and dry and we experienced a heatwave in November, which further accelerated flowering and fruitset. As a result, this brought the start of vintage forward by three weeks. The hot, dry summer ensured there was no disease pressure.
Vintage: Vintage started in early February, slightly earlier than average, with the last of the wineries finishing in mid-April. Invariable warm days and mild evenings throughout vintage were conducive to excellent flavour, colour and berry development.
Yields and quality: The Clare Valley is made up of five distinct sub-regions, which include Auburn, Watervale, Sevenhill, Polish Hill River and Clare. Producers from across these sub-regions were happy with the results from vintage 2010. In the eastern ranges, specifically, quality was exceptional. Grenache and Semillon look very impressive, as does Shiraz and Riesling. We should expect to see some fabulous wines from these varieties.
