2005 vintage report for Ballarat (Victoria)

The early growing season was characterised by an even budburst and good flowering and fruit set. Unseasonably heavy rains in February led to greatly-reduced stress on vineyards, with some vineyards going through the growing season with minimal levels of irrigation. The rain was followed up by warm, dry conditions throughout March, April and into May. Temperatures throughout this period were quite moderate, with few excessively hot days.
As a result, fruit flavour have not been knocked about by the heat. The fruit that came into wineries was fully mature with excellent flavours and very little disease. This fruit quality was reflected in juice and wine quality, with only minimal acid adjustments being required. Standouts to date appear to be Pinot Noir and small parcels of Merlot that set well this season. Yields are less than the bumper levels of 2004, but slightly above average.
