2002 vintage report for Mornington Peninsula (Victoria)

‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the summer of our discontent,’ said Cheryl Lee, executive officer of the Mornington Peninsula Vignerons Association.
A mild winter saw a very early budburst with good fruitfulness apparent.
‘But unfortunately,’ said Cheryl. ‘The weather closed in at flowering and it was cold, wet and windy which caused cap stick resulting in the worst fruitset in memory. One long-term vigneron said it was the worst season he had seen in 27 years. But he cautioned against despair because the finest wines in the world come from regions that are on the edge climatically.’
A warm dry autumn ensured the crop available was harvested in excellent condition and the quality appears to be very good. Crop levels dropped to around 30% of the previous year and the total crush is expected to be around 1,500 tonnes.
