2002 vintage report for Margaret River (Western Australia)

A very dry winter followed by early summer rainfall and cooler than average temperatures benefited the vines making fruit quality high. Yields were lower than last year in many vineyards, but the overall yield increased due to the number of vineyards coming into production.
Variable fruitset occurred due to rains and wind at flowering. Improved management and lower summer temperatures led to low vine stress and good vine nutritional status.
Chardonnay yields were down but other varieties were on target. Parts of the region enjoyed consistent south-easterly winds ensuring the canopies were dry, aiding disease control.
This year’s vintage was longer than usual and reds were very slow to ripen. The warm April was a saving grace in a late ripening year. The slow, even ripening through the summer months resulted in very good quality grapes.
