2002 vintage report for Manjimup (Western Australia)

The overall yield in Manjimup was down by 20 to 30% on last year. Early ripening varieties were down by 30 to 40%, but yields for the mid to late varieties were about normal. Vintage began in late March and the weather during harvest was cool and dry, and there were no real disease problems.
Peter Nicholas, president of the Manjimup Wine Region Association, said a vintage highlight was the quality of reds.
‘Most of the reds were harvested in mid April in cool conditions, particularly the Merlot, and the quality looks fantastic,’ he said. ‘And the whites will be the best since 1999. There were long hang times, the Chardonnay was harvested in April and the yields were very low, in some cases less than 5 t/ha’.
