2002 vintage report for Limestone Coast (South Australia)

John Innes, president of the Limestone Coast Wine Industry Council, said the long cool growing season followed by above average temperatures in March and April contributed to excellent quality fruit, although yields were down by about 50% on last year.
‘The quality of the reds is the best for some years with many winemakers believing that overall flavour and structure will challenge the 1998 vintage,’ he said.
‘The whites are also very good with the best Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc for some time.’
John said white yields were average to slightly below average. However, red yields were significantly down with some Cabernet vineyards yielding just 20% of average. He said extremely cool weather in November and December resulted in poor fruitset.
