2002 vintage report for Lachlan Valley (New South Wales)

The overriding feature of the Lachlan Valley vintage was the late frost that occurred on 20 and 21 October, 2001.
Vineyards exposed to the south-west and those on lower ground received moderate to severe frost damage while vineyards on lighter soil and slopes protected from the south-west received little or no frost damage.
One vineyard on flat unprotected ground reported an average 70% reduction in yield as a result of the frost, affecting all varieties. However, what little fruit they harvested was of exceptional quality, probably due to the low yield. Another vineyard on sloping ground and lighter soil received damage only to the lower south-west corner, the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon being affected. The small portion of Shiraz effected was a total loss. The Cabernet Sauvignon recovered fairly well but quality was compromised by a second crop, producing uneven ripening and reduced Baume. All other varieties were unaffected.
Where there was no frost damage yields were slightly above average and the quality was very good.
