2002 vintage report for Geographe (Western Australia)

The reduced yields experienced by numerous Australian wine regions extended to Geographe, where yields fell 10 to 20% but the quality of the fruit is excellent.
Capel Vale winemaker Nicole Esdaile said mild and dry conditions in the winter, spring and summer, and wet conditions at flowering, led to uneven ripening and/or reduced fruitset.
Nicole said a highlight of the vintage was excellent flavour intensity in the whites with ripe flavours at lower sugar levels and great acid balance.
‘It was the best year for whites for some time,’ she said.
‘The whites will be more elegant this year with great flavours and structure and lower alcohol.’
She said the reds, which were late to ripen, had good flavour but were not as ripe as the previous year. Acid balance tended to be a little out with high pH and sometimes TA.
