2002 vintage report for Cowra (New South Wales)

Yields in Cowra were down by about 30% on last year, according to Mark Ward, chairman of the Cowra Regional Vineyard Association.
Mark said that frost in late October caused considerable damage to vines in the region, with losses of up to 95% in some vineyards. Shiraz yields were generally down significantly.
Vintage began on 18 February and the region was hit by heavy rain in February (360 mm) in patchy storms. March was fine and warm. There were some minor botrytis problems in white varieties.
Mark said the dry spring and cool summer resulted in excellent flavour development and ripening, leading to ‘best ever quality reds’ being produced in most vineyards.
