2002 vintage report for Canberra (NSW/ACT)

Yields in the Canberra District were down by about 40% on last year, according to Allan Pankhurst of the Canberra District Vignerons Association.
Allan said conditions at flowering were hot, windy and dry, reducing fruitset.
‘Extremely dry conditions during late December and January constrained berry fill,’ he said.
‘But the quality of the grapes is very high this year due to the smaller berry size and excellent conditions pre-harvest. The reds are well ripened and show intense flavours and good colour.
‘Winemakers are very excited at the overall quality. Lower yields increased the intensity of flavours.’
Vintage began on 10 March and the weather was excellent, with few disease problems.
Allan said the growth of the Canberra district had brought with it pressures on processing capacity and picking labour which ‘have been responded to well but will continue to provide challenges for the future.’
