2002 vintage report for Ballarat (Victoria)

Yields in Ballarat were significantly lower than last year, with the magnitude of the drop ranging from 50 to 100%, according to Peter Roche, vice president of the Ballarat District Vignerons Association.
‘At least one winery did not harvest this season,’ Peter said.
Yields were affected by poor fruitset and low heat accumulation early in the season, while in some vineyards powdery mildew was a significant problem.
Vintage was late, with the clear conditions immediately leading up to vintage being ideal for final ripening.
‘The potential for both red and white varieties should be for average to very high quality wines,’ Peter said.
‘Acid levels ranged from average to high, with sugar levels reaching average levels. Overall it was a very challenging year.’
