2001 vintage report for McLaren Vale (South Australia)

Preliminary Report (March):David Dean, general manager of McLaren Vale Winemakers Inc., said with all of the whites picked and most of the reds in, everything was looking good. ‘Colour and flavour are phenomenal,’ he said. ‘Cabernet looks stunning.’ The extreme heat in January and February didn’t cause as many problems as had been feared by some people. ‘Nature compensated with a very wet winter last year and vines generally had a greater canopy cover which provided protection from the summer heat.’ Rain in mid-March was a worry for reds which were close to picking, especially Grenache, but it was accompanied by strong winds which had a drying effect and David didn’t anticipate too many problems.
