2001 vintage report for Maryborough (Victoria)

Margaret Flowers of the Maryborough Regional Winegrowers Association said generally everyone was pleased that the harvest turned out as well as it did after the frosting in October/November and the bird damage. Crop levels were down and this seemed to be typical of the region. ‘A little botrytis got into the grapesùnaturally not appreciated for the reds so spraying was conducted. The mould on the whites was welcomed by some, or people had to produce a ‘sticky’ even if they didn’t want this to happen,’ Margaret said. ‘Welshman’s Reef Vineyard (Newstead Winery) was delighted with its botrytised Semillon.’ Although crops were down in quantity, quality was not bad with the majority of reds reaching 13¦ Baume. Late harvesting did occur on some vineyards due to lateness of ripening in the grapes. Climatic conditions were deemed conducive to a good harvest. Summer rains were appreciated at the correct times and the little ‘incorrect rains’ did not overdo their damage. ‘All round, people are happy. The wines promise to be full flavoured and long-lasting,’ Margaret said.
