2001 vintage report for Hastings River (New South Wales)

The Hastings River region had a difficult harvest, due to weather. A dry spring and early summer resulted in small berries, and excess rain caused some losses to mildew in late varieties. John Cassegrain of the Hastings River Vignerons (now North Coast Wine Growers Association) said the early harvest period was good and there was no adverse effect of weather on early varieties. The weather caused some loss of quality in late varieties. Describing the quality of reds, John said it was average, though variable. ‘There were some very good parcels; the biggest effect was loss of quantity.’ Semillon and Chardonnay quality was good. ‘All fruit is hand-harvested, allowing fruit selection, and ample processing capacity enabled the region to maximise the quality and speed-up processing.’ John said.
