2001 vintage report for Granite Belt (Queensland)

Tony Comino, president of the Granite Belt Wine Industry Association, said the season had distinguished itself by being particularly dry from budburst until the end of January, which favoured flavour development in all varieties. From the beginning of February there was widespread rain over a period of 2-3 weeks, with falls ranging from 7 to 12 inches. Tony said early whites stood up well, with particularly good Chardonnay and Semillon, but some mid-season fruit was damaged. Once the rain had passed it was back to near-drought conditions. Tony said the Bordeaux varieties of reds came up well with good flavour and good colour. Some of the Rh(ne varieties suffered with the wet weather, particularly Shiraz. ‘However, there was wide variation in the weather conditions across the region and we will have to wait to see the overall condition of the wines,’ Tony said. He said yields across the region were down by about 15%.
