2001 vintage report for Coonawarra (South Australia)

Preliminary Report (March):In the Coonawarra region picking started a week to 10 days earlier than usual. At the time of writing the Sauvignon Blanc harvest was finished, together with a good part of the Chardonnay. President of the Coonawarra Vignerons’ Association, Wayne Stehbens, said yields were encouragingùabove average for the first time since 1998. He said the heat earlier in the year had had an impact on acidity, with some fruit showing lower pH at similar stages compared with previous years. He said flavours were promising to be ‘terrific’. Rain in March may have diluted sugar in some fruit. During a lull in the wet weather growers were putting on the last of preventive sprays.
