2000 vintage report for Yarra Valley (Victoria)

Peter Fergusson, president of the Yarra Valley Winegrowers Association, said there would be excellent to outstanding wines from this vintage. ‘A great year for all varieties, with rich colours, fine and focused flavours and good sweet fruit,’ he said of the reds. He described the whites as good to very good. ‘Chardonnay plateaued early but has ample flavour with lower acidity. Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are the highlights.’ Peter said a warm to hot February and March was followed by a mild, dry April and some rain in early May. ‘There was some sunburn, especially in Pinot, and some vineyards experienced water stress, but generally the warm conditions were ideal for ripening and there was virtually no disease.’
