2000 vintage report for Wrattonbully (South Australia)

Growers encountered a difficult season in Wrattonbully and tight attention to disease monitoring and spray programs was needed to keep fruit disease-free, said Greg Koch, secretary of the region’s wine industries association. He attributed a decrease in yields of up to 20% to frosts in October 1998 and April 1999 which affected bud initiation and depleted carbohydrate reserves, causing a poor fruitset. Greg said the weather during the growing season was favourable for powdery and downy mildew and mild ripening weather after veraison slowed down the rapid ripening. ‘The 2000 reds are of excellent quality,’ Greg said. ‘Vines are now more in balance with age and yield. There are still many hectares of young vines coming into production, and very encouraging quality signs from the older vines. He said it was an excellent vintage for whites. Yields were down more than reds but wines showed excellent fruit characteristics.
