2000 vintage report for Tumbarumba (New South Wales)

Vintage started at the normal time but was prolonged, according to Brian Wilkinson, president of Tumbarumba Vignerons. Yield was higher than average due to very good fruitset and increased bunch weights. This translated to a 75% increase over the 1999 yield, which was severely affected by frost in October 1998. Weather ranged from fine and warm early in the vintage to wet and cool later and Brian said the late material was under moderate botrytis pressure. ‘Some late fruit struggled to reach desired Baume,’ he said. Brian described the Pinot Noir for sparkling baseand some dry red varieties as excellent, but some late varieties such as Cabernet were belowexpected quality. The same applied to whites, where early maturing Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were excellent, but some late crops were below expected quality. ‘This cooler and wet late season demonstrated the advantages of early maturing varieties in this region,’ said Brian. Shoot thinning was widely practised, with positive results.
