2000 vintage report for Swan Valley (Western Australia)

In the Swan Valley vintage started on 20 January, about normal for the region. David Atkinson, secretary of the Swan Valley and Regional Winemakers’ Association, said rain in January caused problems with disease and led to a drop in white yield of about 35% on last year. Reds were about the same as the previous year’s average yield. Late rain and hot and humid weather during vintage meant that powdery mildew needed extra control. Downy mildew was controlled. David said the quality of reds was ‘excellent’ and that of whites average to good across most varieties. Some excellent Verdelho was reported.
