2000 vintage report for Rutherglen (Victoria)

‘To pick or not to pick’ was the big decision this vintage in the Rutherglen region. Winemakers of Rutherglen spokesman Bernard Gehrig said extreme heat in February was followed by rain and unusually high humidity which brought botrytis problems. ‘Some fortified were picked extremely early, but most struggled to get Baume,’ Bernard said. ‘The grapes tended not to ripen as usual, particularly on younger vines.’ He said early picked reds had excellent colour and flavour. ‘Whites were processed mainly without the problems of the reds and seem to have plenty of flavour and acidity.’ This vintage there were no labour shortages and a new winery took pressure off the district’s processing capacity.
