2000 vintage report for Murray Darling (NSW/Victoria)

Grieg Greenwood, CEO of the Victorian and Murray Valley Wine Grape Growers’ Council, said vintage in the area was early, with first grapes picked on 20 January. Yield was down 10% from last year. Lower yields were mainly in Chardonnay, which was severely affected by spring growth problems. Weather during vintage was hot at first, then wet. There was minimal disease as conditions were cool and windy after the rain. Grieg described the 2000 vintage quality for reds as generally above average, with very good colour. Some later reds were down on quality due to ripening problems, and some blocks were below Baume target. The whites showed good quality, with good acid levels in ripe fruit with lots of flavour. ‘The main problem was the impact on intake as a result of changeable weather,’ Grieg said.
