2000 vintage report for Mudgee (New South Wales)

Excellent whites, the best in 10 years, are reported from Mudgee. ‘Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon were picked on flavour ripeness and show excellent balance and textbook herbaceous characters,’ said Frank Hellwig, area vineyard manager for Orlando Wyndham. Vintage began on 14 February, which is normal for the region. Yields were generally average, although some growers had reduced yields because of wet weather. Ripening was going well until rain began on 15 March, and double the usual monthly rainfall followed. Some reds suffered from botrytis towards the end of March. Vineyard access for machine harvesters was difficult in March and April. Local wineshow results indicate those who harvested their reds early produced wines with some promise.
