Russell Baker, president of the Mornington Peninsula Vignerons Association, said the region had had its warmest and driest summer in at least 25 years. Vintage started a couple of weeks earlier than usual, and Russell said quality was excellent. ‘Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at the premium end of the market is our strength and cropping is steady at about seven tonnes a hectare,’ he said. ‘Growers in some micro-areas are thrilled with their Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.’
