2000 vintage report for Hunter Valley (New South Wales)

‘The best Chardonnay for four years,’ said Bruce Tyrrell, president of the Hunter Valley Vineyard Association. He said the quality of both red and white wines was above average across the board, with high sugar and acid and low pH. Vintage got underway on 18 January, about normal for the region. Yields were down from last year by 20% in whites and 10% in red varieties because of extreme heat in early February. This was preceded by cold weather in December to mid January. Weather during vintage was fine and hot to very hot, with 20 mm of rain. Bruce said no disease was encountered and all the fruit was clean.
