2000 vintage report for Adelaide Plains (South Australia)

Joe Grilli, president of the Adelaide Plains Winemakers’ Association, said there was no doubt that 2000 was one of the most difficult vintages in recent memory. ‘Inclement weather at flowering last October affected fruitset more than was at first thought and led to a decrease of 15% on last year’s yield,’ he said. Weather during vintage was generally hot, with rain right in the middle of it (mid February). However, despite the rain most fruit came in healthy, Joe said, although isolated patches with poor viticultural management suffered some botrytis problems. Joe said fruit picked before the rain was excellent. After the rain some patches recovered better than others. ‘The low yields and warm January saw some lovely fruit picked early,’ he said. ‘After the mid February rains Baumes dropped and poor viticulture was punished badly. So overall for both whites and reds there are patchy results.’
